"Beyond AU" Speaker Series
Are you interested in urban education? Join the Black Alumni Alliance and the Black Professional Association on Thursday, October 10 to welcome LaTanya S. Sothern, SOC/BA '92 Instructional Lead Teacher with the Prince George’s County Public School System.
Mrs. Sothern graduated in 1992 with a dual degree in Public Communication and Economics. She will speak about her undergraduate experience at AU, her current career advising teachers and will answer your questions about successful tools in the workplace.
LaTanya Sothern has worked as an educator in the Prince George’s Public Schools (PGCPS) System for over 16 years. A native Washingtonian, she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communication and Economics from The American University and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in Early Childhood Education from Howard University. She is founder of the P.E.A.C.E (Parents of Exceptional Adults and Children Empowered) Ministry at her church: a support for caregivers of the disabled.
Ms. Sothern is a franchise owner of KinderJam, a program that infuses pre-academic skills with music and movement. She holds a Maryland Advanced Professional Certification in Early Childhood Education and Education Administration and Supervision. She achieved National Board Certification (Early Childhood Generalist) in 2010. She is currently an Instructional Lead Teacher where she coaches and mentors other teachers. She is happily married with two sons and resides in Prince George’s County.
As an undergraduate, LaTanya was an active member of the Lambda Zeta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a past president of the AU Gospel Choir, and a member of the AU Black Student Alliance.
