Join us for American Women, a special lecture series highlighting the inspirational women of American University.  The second event in the series features Brigid Maher, associate professor of film and media arts on the School of Communication, with "Filming Women in Islamic Cultures."  Moderated by award-winning journalist and AU professor Iris Krasnow, this presentation will be followed by a dessert and coffee networking reception.

Professor Brigid Maher heads the Emerging Media concentration in SOC's Film and Media Arts Division.  She will share her experiences filming Muslim women religious leaders in Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon for her film Veiled Voices.  Maher will discuss cultural challenges three women face and her approach to documenting issues of representation and ethnographic filming in the Muslim world.  She will also speak about her upcoming interactive project about Women and Islam, and show a sneak preview of her current documentary, The Mama Sherpas

Cost to attend is $20 for alumni, parents, and friends.  No cost for AU faculty, staff, and students.
