Join Los Angeles area alumni and friends for the first-ever AU Culture
WONKs event: a private walking food tour of LA's Little Tokyo, followed
by a lecture from Kogod School of Business Professor Richard Linowes
on the intersection of Japanese and American culture. While walking through one of the country's only "Japantowns", you'll sample some of the neighborhood's best culinary treats. Led by a local with insider knowledge of the area, you can expect to learn about Little Tokyo history, Japanese culture, and the local culinary scene. Following the tour, Professor Richard Linowes will talk more broadly about the history and societal implications of the intersection of Japanese and American culture.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for walking. $40 per person includes eight food stops
and the post-tour lecture. Due to the limited space on the tour, registrants will be asked to only bring one guest each.
The tour will visit eight restaurants in Little Tokyo and fill follow the following itinerary:
10:00 a.m.: Tour starts
10:15 a.m.: Chado Tea Room
Sip on teas and share scones while learning interesting facts about the different varieties and benefits of tea. Chado features approximately 300 different types of tea and is a Zagat Survey "Top Rated Tea Shop."
10:40 a.m.: Yamazaki Bakery
Enjoy a taste of delicately flavored breads. Yamazaki began as a provider of fresh, high-quality baked goods in the post-World War II era.
11:00 a.m.: Wakasaya
Savor tuna belly and udon with fresh sauces to spice it up. This eatery is the first U.S. location of a famous donburi establishment in Japan.
11:30 a.m.: Fugetsu-Do
Enjoy a fresh Japanese mochi confection in what is considered the finest Japanese manju artisan in Los Angeles. This confectionary store has existed in the heart of the historic district of little Tokyo since 1903.
11:45 a.m.: Fat Spoon
Guests will enjoy a tasting of Japanese vegetarian curry. A concept by restauranteur Michael Cardenes, owner of the popular Lazy Ox Canteen and Abiyura Toranoko in Little Tokyo.
12:30 p.m.: Mitsuru Cafe
Find out why people line up in masses for their infamous Imagawayaki (red bean pastry). Guests can watch the pastry chef make them fresh and hot off the griddle.
12:45 p.m.: Mikawaya
Finish off the tour on a sweet note with a tasting of mochilato, a unique ice cream dessert. Mikawaya are the creators of mochi ice cream and feature an array of traditional Japanese pastries.
1:00 p.m.: Oiwake
Convene and dine on a selection of traditional Japanese cuisine as we listen to Professor Richard Linowes discuss the intersection of Japanese and American cultures.
Professor Richard Linowes
is an assistant professor in the Department of Management at the Kogod School of Business. He teaches strategy, global leadership, entrepreneurship,
and cross-cultural management. His professional management experience
includes several years with Accenture and Goldman Sachs, where he helped
plan the firm’s international expansion. Linowes’ research focuses on
business in emerging markets and the globalization of management. He
studies the challenges of managing cross-culturally and how American and
Japanese multinationals adjust to countries around the world. He has taught U.S. State
Department foreign service officers to manage cross-culturally. Dr.
Linowes develops innovative approaches to management education and was a
Fulbright Scholar for pedagogical innovation. He has taught in several
countries and has traveled extensively around the world. Recently he
was visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan
