Just for Students

The Alumni Association is committed to the development of programs designed to bring students and alumni together. Through meaningful interaction between students and alumni, we can inspire learning and encourage lasting relationships. The Alumni Association hosts a variety of events for students and alumni to interact. Students benefit from the advice and guidance from experienced professionals and alumni remain connected to AU.

The Alumni Board created the Student-Alumni Initiative Committee to serve the role of creating student-alumni events on and off campus.  The following are programs and events that are currently in place to enhance the student-alumni relationship.

Alumni in the KNOW
Created in 2012 and sponsored by the American University Alumni Association, this new distinguished alumni event series features AU alumni who will speak to their AU experiences and pathways to success. Alumni in the KNOW events are perfect opportunities for the AU community to hear how alums have excelled since their days as AU students. These events are free to attend and are open to the entire AU community. Come get to KNOW our AU alums! Please visit our website for more information.

Annual Toast to Graduates
An annual tradition, graduating students join President Kerwin '71 and Ann Kerwin '71, the American University Alumni Board, the Young Alumni Chapter Board, and the Office of Alumni Relations to celebrate their upcoming graduation. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to gather before commencement, toast their friends, and learn a bit about how they may remain involved after graduation. Following brief remarks from the president of the Alumni Board, as well as President Kerwin, the seniors present the Senior Class Gift.

Career Services

AU students and alumni have full access to the AU Career Center.  Let the AU Career Center put you in the best position to land that new job and/or help you find a job. For more information, visit AU’s Career Center.

Career Student-Alumni Networking Events
Each year, The Career Center and The Office of Alumni Relations partner with The School of Public Affairs, School of International Service, School of Communication and The College of Arts and Sciences-School of Education, Teaching and Health at highly anticipated Student-Alumni Networking Receptions.

Students and alumni seeking jobs or internships have the chance to connect with alumni and employers offering opportunities and advice.  Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres and refreshments while mingling with students, alumni, employers, faculty, and staff.

Convocation Bagel Breakfast
At the beginning of each school year, the Alumni Association welcomes all incoming freshman with a bagel breakfast in the Quad before Convocation.  All incoming freshman are welcomed to campus by alumni volunteers who hand out 'Class of ..." t-shirts, before processing to Bender Arena for the ceremony, featuring President Kerwin, faculty speakers, and the president of the AU Alumni Association Board.

Dinner with Alumni
The Dinner with Alumni program brings students with alumni together through a series of dinners scheduled during the school year. These dinners are great career networking opportunities for students to interact with current experts in the field.  The Dinner with Alumni Program will host 20 dinners during the 2014-2015 academic year; scroll down to see the current schedule of dinners.

Partnership with Athletics

Each year, the Alumni Association partners with the Athletics Department to promote student-alumni interaction. During the 2014-2015 academic year, we will host four pizza giveaways at basketball games. Alumni will also be present at Senior Days with the AU sports teams to hand out Tchotchkes to our AU seniors. See the Athletics webpage for all sporting event schedules.

Senior Barbecues at the President's House
Students join President and Ann Kerwin for a home-style barbecue honoring graduating seniors at The President's House. Seniors are able to visit with their favorite AU professors and staff. Alumni inform students on how to stay involved with AU after they graduate. There is plenty of good, FREE food from Red, Hot, & Blue, and time to mix and mingle before final exams. 2015 dates coming soon!

Senior Class Gift

Each class raises money in order to purchase a gift for the university.  Recent class gifts have included an information kiosk, university banners, a September 11th Memorial, and a wind turbine.  For more information, visit the Senior Class Gift webpage.

Social Networking
American University Alumni has official Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter pages for AU alumni and students to expand AU's worldwide network. We encourage you to explore these social networking opportunities and join the American University Alumni Facebook group and LinkedIn group and follow us on Twitter!

Summer Send-offs
Graciously hosted by alumni and parents in cities throughout the world during the summer months, AU Summer Send-Offs afford incoming students and their families an opportunity to meet current members of the AU community including parents, students, alumni, and administrators.
