DC-Area High School Ethics Bowl

The DC-Area High School Ethics Bowl is a regional competition hosted by American University. In the Ethics Bowl, high school teams discuss and debate real-world ethical questions. Last year fourteen schools from DC, Maryland, and Virginia participated.

The funds we receive from this UFUND campaign would be used to directly support the Ethics Bowl. This event is an annual regional competition hosted by American University for local high school students. Current AU students – graduate and undergraduate, from CAS, SIS, and Kogod – serve as assistant coaches, moderators, judges, and other volunteers for this event, as do many AU alumni. Assistant coaches have the opportunity to receive class credit for their Ethics Bowl work by enrolling in PHIL-396, Practicum in Ethics. They get a chance to engage with local high school students and impact their ethical development, as well as introduce them to AU. Volunteers also have an opportunity to network with local community members – politicians, business owners, authors and journalists, teachers and professors, and non-profit workers, to name a few – who also serve as volunteers for the Ethics Bowl.

We anticipate this year’s Bowl to cost roughly $13,750. Last year, the 4th Annual Ethics Bowl cost $13,566.21. That expense included renting the venue for the event, catered breakfast and lunch on the day of the event, promotional materials, a stipend for our keynote speaker, travel stipends for the student assistant coaches, the salary for a graduate assistant/lead coordinator, and miscellaneous supplies. The Ethics Bowl event had about 300 attendees, including nearly 100 high school students, their coaches and assistant coaches, 34 moderators and judges, 3 student volunteers, about 100 community supporters. This year, we anticipate more schools will participate. As a result, we will also have more judges, moderators, assistant coaches, and other volunteers.
